Ballater Community Car Club
As part of the community transport initiative Ballater Royal Deeside (BRD) wants to assess the interest in setting up a community Car Club here in Ballater. If there is sufficient demand, then a car could be located in the village on a permanent basis so that it can be easily accessed and used by the community. To use the car it would involve a previously accepted member pre-booking the car online, paying the booking fee and then simply accessing the car with a code at the time of the hire and simply driving it away. The necessary checks on a members’ driving licence are completed as part of the eligibility process to join the club. At the end of the hire the car is returned to the designated parking slot in the village. These schemes operate by charging a monthly fee to be a member (~ £7/month or ~£60/year) an hourly rate for the hire (~£7.70/hr or ~£51/day) and then a pence per mile charge ~ 27/mile). For petrol/diesel/hybrid cars there will be a fuel card in the car to top up and pay for more fuel if required. The club member only pays the mileage charge as the cost of fuel is billed directly to the car club company. The only thing to check before filling the car is that the garage accepts the fuel card that is provided in the car.
Being a member of the car club also allows you access to any club car throughout the UK and not just in Ballater so it could be useful for holidays etc.

We think this could potentially be of interest to residents in the village and may even negate the need for a second car, with direct financial savings to the household. In addition, carbon emissions would be reduced because we would plan for a hybrid to start with, and if it proves popular, a second car could be added later. A fully electric vehicle with a range of typically more that 200 miles to be workable for our rural location could be obtained later as electric cars are in short supply at present.
Establishing such a facility for both residents and visitors, will cost Ballater Royal Deeside (BRD) some capital investment therefore as part of our assessment of the level of potential interest, we have compiled the following short questionnaire for you to complete.
